An asynchronous interview is a hiring assessment in which the candidate records or submits responses without a live interviewer present, typically completing the interview at their own convenience within a deadline set by the employer.

How it works

The employer configures a question set and sends a unique interview link to each candidate. The candidate opens the link at a time of their choosing, within a defined window (commonly 24 to 72 hours), and completes the interview. In AI-conducted asynchronous interviews, a voice agent like GAIA conducts the conversation in real time with the candidate but without a human on the other side. The session is recorded; the AI produces a transcript and rubric scorecard immediately. The recruiter reviews the completed interview at a separate time.

Asynchronous vs live AI interviews

Some AI interviews are synchronous: a scheduled video session with an AI conducting the conversation at a fixed time. Asynchronous AI interviews are more common because the scheduling friction is lower and the consistency benefit is equivalent. The main trade-off is that asynchronous interviews cannot accommodate real-time scheduling or proctoring that requires a live proctor session.
