Answer authenticity refers to the degree to which a candidate's interview responses reflect their own genuine knowledge, experience, and reasoning rather than content generated by an AI assistant, copied from a prepared script, or supplied by a third party during the session.
How it works
Live behavioral probing is the primary mechanism for testing answer authenticity. An AI interviewer or a structured human interview will ask follow-up questions that require the candidate to extend, clarify, or apply their stated experience in a way that is difficult to anticipate. Generic or AI-generated answers tend to break down when pressed for specifics: exact timelines, team names, the reasoning behind a specific decision, or what happened next. A candidate with genuine experience can respond to these probes naturally; one reading from a generated script typically cannot.
Technical authenticity signals
Beyond behavioral probing, some proctoring systems monitor for technical signals of unauthorized assistance: screen-share activity, overlay applications active during the session, response latency patterns that suggest copy-paste behavior, or audio artifacts consistent with text-to-speech. These signals are contextual: they indicate potential assistance but do not prove it. Human review is required before any action is taken.
Answer authenticity and fairness
Authenticity analysis must be applied carefully to avoid penalizing candidates for legitimate characteristics. Non-native speakers may pause more before answering; candidates with anxiety may show unusual latency; candidates on assistive technology may use software that triggers overlay signals. Best-practice systems separate behavioral rubric scoring (which already rewards genuine, specific answers) from technical authenticity signals, treating the latter as context for human review rather than automated scores.
